Mother and Sisters Find Answers And Resolve During Retreat Visit
As we get ready to celebrate Mother’s Day, I thought I’d share a touching story of recent SHIFT Retreat visitors… a mom and her two caring daughters.
Diabetes, Cancer, Rheumatoid Arthritis, oh my...
One family. Two sisters. Three women. Four diseases: cancer, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, depression. Are any of these in your story?
These four health compromisers certainly appear to be unrelated. However, the smart SHIFTer knows there is a common factor: a single element not only driving but ensuring the thriving of each of these conditions. Lousy. Right?
This family of women were, at one time, in that place of overwhelm and their story is a message for all of us. Each was grappling with their own health circumstance while lovingly supporting each other in their circumstance. It’s what women do, yes? Quietly carry their own particular set of troubles all while being there for their sister, mother, daughter, spouse, child, friend.
Natural givers, women open-heartedly take on the burdens of others and, more often than not, end up sacrificing their own well-being by putting other’s needs before theirs.
Well, this is exactly the place where SHIFT made a difference.
Together, Betty, Dee, and Karen chose to get away to the SHIFT Retreat on the Gulf of Mexico. Chose. That’s an important word. Choice. In the end, That’s all any of us really has. Life will throw us curve balls, challenges, ‘unacceptables’ even. The only thing we truly own is our attitude. How will we respond? Succumb or solve? Bitter or better? Anger or action? Sadness or gladness? Turn a blind eye or seek? Ignorance or truth?
The SHIFT Retreat offers a haven in which to solve your particular health situation. Education in a supportive, compassionate atmosphere with a teacher who has your best interest at heart. An environment that is restorative, relaxing, and rejuvenating. Tranquil bayfront waters. Playful dolphins. Gentle manatee. Carribean blue temperate surf. Soft, white powder sand. Sunshine and shelling. Bike riding. Strolling or simply ‘being’. In just one day ...one day!
Betty, Dee, and Karen acquired the solution to their individual health crisis. And the icing on the cake (shifted cake that is!) is that they happily discovered that they could apply the very same action to resolve each of their very different circumstance.
“They happily discovered that they could apply the very same action to resolve each of their very different circumstance.”
That’s because each of these health circumstances... diabetes, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, depression...(and chronic weight gain) share a common denominator.
These three action-minded women are each applying the same science, the same purposeful action, the same strategic eating and, collectively, they are each unraveling their own individual, personal health crisis. They are an example of how we all benefit from the same science driven application.
You see, we are all in this race together, the human race, and each of our individual human bodies operate under the same metabolic principles. Though we sometime like to think, “we are no different than another”. The very same strategic food action that starves cancer cells, also defeats diabetes, reduces RA inflammation, and yes, even addresses depression! Oh! What a win!
For before, Betty, Dee, and Karen each
felt separate, marginalized, alone in their health overwhelm because the foods everyone else was reaching for weren’t ‘meant’ for them.
We understand what it feels like to watch others eat without consequence, without remorse, without worry... without even a thought. (Now we know that they just don’t know.) Food can become the great divider as we succumb to bringing our own food, our own dish to the party. Talk about lousy! That was Betty, Dee, and Karen. But no longer!! For they no longer have to cook something different, or bring their own dish to the holiday, or be left out at the picnic, or have to politely with every ounce of self-restraint utter ‘no thank you’ and pass the plate down the table!
Those of us in health crisis intimately understand what I’m talking about. I am talking about the isolation of being on the sidelines at the party. Surrounded by “care-free eaters”. We know that the food at the buffet doesn’t work for us. Life isn’t working for us. Betty, Dee, and Karen had experienced this. Have you? They don’t anymore.
Interestingly, their collective SHIFT began first as awareness. One sister SHIFTed. Her shift was noticed, then spread to the other sister who also positively impacted her husband. Then both sisters brought Mom into their SHIFTing and behold we have three success stories rolled into one! (Actually four if you count the husband!:)
This is what SHIFT does naturally. It ripples. And this is the story of how SHIFT began. My family and I, researching and experimenting with food to support our middle child diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the tender age of Sweet Sixteen and unexpectedly ended up with the solution to all metabolic mayhem.
While our daughter’s disease is not curable, her situation softened and her health restored significantly.
Here are their outcomes so far:
-Karen, 48 yrs.
Lost 35 lbs so far. Completely off pain medication (Lyrica) and pain free.
“At night before I made this shift, I would sit on the couch and my hips would just ache ...oftentimes to the point of tears. Sitting here now – no aches or pains! And sometimes my ankles would swell and it’d be so painful to walk – again…no swelling! I now understand that my pain was fueled by foods I had been addicted to – but I have not had any of those since shifted. I don’t even crave them either!!!! Freedom! And now I enjoy so many other foods I had been told to avoid. I know I have said this already but, I will continue to be so grateful that you came into my life – thank you.“
- Dee, 55 yrs.
Lost 10 lbs. Reached weight loss goal. Dropped depression meds by 75%
“My goal was to lower my A1c number to resolve a diagnosis of pre-diabetes. After spending about 5 months applying the SHIFT formula, I did just that! (6.3 down to 5.9) I chose to SHIFT “softly” with a slow and steady transition. I ‘ve lost 10 lbs. so far. I am even further thrilled... thrilled!... when I proved that I could travel and enjoy vacation foods while still staying on track! Double win! The SHIFT plan/formula is so easy to adjust to... yet life-changing!! Add to this that my husband has benefitted simply by eating what I prepare! He’s lost weight which is great since he has type 2 diabetes and he loves the foods I prepare! Triple win!”
- Betty, 72 yrs.
Lost 25 lbs. Gained pain-free mobility and renewed energy. A year ago barely able to move from her bed to the living room chair today able to walk a museum with Grandkids!
“Years with Type 2 diabetes and now currently in recovery from battle with Ovarian cancer, I proudly say I lost 25 lbs and have the energy for living again! No longer trapped in a chair I am active and happy to be spending time with my family... all while beating both diabetes AND cancer. Cravings? Gone. Overwhelm? A thing of the past.”
